GOKARNA TAPOVANA

Some description text for this item

Gokarna is one of the most prominent `Tirtha Kshetras’, pilgrimage centres, recognized by the sages. In the Skanda Purana, Lord Shiva says Gokarna is supreme among all the Tirtha Kshetras. After being created by Brahma, when Rudra performed penance and then ascended, it was the region that came out of the ear of the earth, so it is called Gokarna.

STORY OF GOKARNA

Once, Skanda (Kartikeya) was eager to meet his father, Lord Shiva, and went to Mount Kailash. On the radiant peak of Kailash, Trilochanadhari Shiva was conversing with Trailokya-Mohini Parvati and the Shiva attendants. Skanda bowed to his father, prostrated before his mother, and sat at their feet. Seeing Skanda, Mahadeva said, "My son, within three nights, I will destroy this universe. Therefore, you must immediately go to Gokarna Kshetra, my place of origin, which bestows spiritual powers. Perform penance there as I instruct and attain siddhi (spiritual perfection). "

Skanda asked, "Why are you carrying out this destruction?"

Shiva replied, "I am not destroying it; it is all governed by time. Under the influence of time, Brahma creates the world, Vishnu sustains it, and I dissolve it. A hundred years of Brahma is considered the lifespan of this time cycle. This universe is repeatedly created and destroyed. This process of dissolution is called pralaya. At the end of each pralaya, I annihilate the entire moving and non-moving universe, dissolve the entire cosmos into prakriti (primordial nature), and merge it into water. When I become water-like, Sattva-guna Narayana reclines in Yoganidra (divine slumber) through his own maya (illusion). After a long time, a beautiful lotus sprouts from his navel. Eventually, that lotus blooms, giving rise to Brahma, who is associated with rajo guna (quality of passion). At that time, water is present everywhere."

Seeing only water everywhere, Brahma became anxious, wondering, "What should I do?" At that moment, a divine voice from the sky proclaimed, "O Lord, create the universe. " Hearing this, Brahma became further troubled, thinking, "How should I create the universe?" Unable to find an answer, he grew extremely angry. From his enraged forehead emerged a child with Tamas guna (the quality of darkness), possessing a body that was half male and half female.

As soon as the child was born, it began to cry. Brahma asked the child, "Why are you crying?" The child replied, "I am crying because I do not have a name. " Brahma said, "O child, since you were crying at birth, your name shall be Rudra (the one who weeps). Now, divide yourself. "

Obeying Brahma's command, the child first separated Prakriti (nature) from itself. Then, it divided itself into eleven forms. I, Shankar, am the eleventh form of that child. Thus, I was born, and this cycle repeats itself every time.

Shiva Nama Japa

Om Namah Shivaya” is a sacred and powerful mantra that invokes Lord Shiva’s blessings, helping to destroy ego and transform consciousness. Its five syllables (Na, Ma, Shi, Va, Ya) represent the five elements — earth, water, fire, air, and space — and purify them within us. Each chant is a spiritual offering that aligns us with cosmic vibrations, dissolves negativity, and connects the soul to the Supreme.

Yoga & Devotion: The Path to the Divine

The word Yoga originates from the Sanskrit root "Yuj, " which means "to join" or "to unite. " In this context, it signifies the union of the self (Aham, the individual ego) with the Mahat (the supreme, the divine). This Mahat is described as the Paramatma (the Supreme Soul) or the all-powerful God. When the individual self merges with the divine, it is called Yoga.

There are three main types of Yoga:

1. Jnana Yoga – The path of knowledge, where the Supreme is realized through intellect and wisdom.

2. Bhakti Yoga – The path of devotion, where continuous chanting of the divine name (Nama Japa) and singing of devotional hymns (Sankirtana) cultivate a sense of devotion. In the ultimate state of devotion, the mind dissolves, and only pure devotion remains, with no sense of ego (Aham).

3. Karma Yoga – The path of action, where selfless actions like sacrifices (Yajna) and rituals (Yaga) are offered to the divine. When such actions are performed without ego or personal desire, only the action remains, and it becomes Karma Yoga.

Among all these forms of Yoga, Bhakti Yoga is considered the most effective and attainable in the Kali Yuga (the current era), hence it is given special importance.

At Gokarna Tapovana, a continuous Nama Japa and Sankirtana is undertaken for the awakening of divine energy. To support this, an online Nama Japa Yajna has been initiated. Devotees can participate from wherever they are, at their preferred time, by chanting the recommended mantra or hymn as many times as they wish. At the end of each month, they are encouraged to submit the total count of their chants along with their name, birth sign (Janma Rashi), and star (Nakshatra) details.

The collective count of these chants is then offered as a sacred oblation during a Havan (fire ritual) at Tapovana, symbolically dedicating it to the divine. This innovative Japa Yajna aims to spread divine vibrations and positivity across the world.

Devotees are encouraged to participate in large numbers, supporting the continuous chanting and spiritual practice at Shri Kshetra. Through this collective effort, the goal is to awaken divine energy, promote positive vibrations, and contribute to world peace and well-being. You are invited to take part in this sacred endeavor and inspire others to join as well.
